My father was called to the British Mission in 1923, at age 20. His younger brother John served there in the early 1930s, one of John's companions being Gordon B. Hinckley. Some time in the past few years the Church News published a photo of a group of British missionaries including both my uncle and President Hinckley (as a young man). Most of the elders in the picture appeared to be of essentially the same age as those two young men. This suggests that the practice of calling younger singlemen was quite well established from the 1930s,if not indeed from the 1920s when my father served.

I have a listing of over 800 names of LDS men who served during the Civil War. Coming across their pension and war rosters was not that hard, but their journals are difficult. I have approximately 25 journals from Salt Lake, Texas, and Arkansas. I would be willing to share info. I can be contacted through bankstondecos@yahoo.com. Best of luck.

This is definitely an interesting topic, especially considering the whole proposition 8 controversy. What I find interesting is how Mormonism seems to always be in the margins of society: opposing, and being opposed to and by many different social aspects. It seems to me that the homosexual aspect comes down to two marginalized groups asserting their rights. Both groups fighting for their rights of belief and practice, but contradicting one another. Is there any answer to solve this friction? It would seem the either one or the other would have to relent in someway, but that would contradict either group's rights.
If a Mormon identity and a Homosexual identity exists, they do not appear to be able to fit together in any compromising way. However, what I find really interesting in this article is the discussion of how certain members maintain both identities together in their personal narratives.
This may be very enlightening of my research on internal and external social boundaries.
